Desktop City

City by PatriciaAnne Daviau

Apparently a response to BIW’s request forĀ  art that fits into tighter spaces, City illustrates just how much can be fit onto a tiny space in SL. Tiny graffiti details, as well as paintball splatters lend character to the painstakingly dilapidated little space. It even has a little suburb under construction that has wonderfully textured insulation packaging.

City asks the timely and important question as to what role scale should play in a digital world. By requiring the viewer to go through the unpleasant chore of switching around with view modes to view the piece, the audience is confronted by the arbitrary limitations of Second Life based on conventions for how big an avatar should “be”, and how objects around it should be rendered.

The limitations of the Metaverse are imposed in order to create an artificially level playing field, so communication and commerce can occur using existing paradigms. However, once we see the whimsical detail of a piece like City, we struggle against these constraints.

Beautiful work.

The Bunnyken Ball Experience

Bunnyken Ball by Nubulosus Nebulosus Severine

The Bunnyken Ball looks to be a pretty straightforward visual and spatial piece, until you fly into it. Then its trippy, creepy, fun. For a limited time, Severine is selling the Bunnyken (Bunny + Chicken) avatar for $L1. The best part? It comes with a free Bunnyken Thermos object. Okay, whoa.

*UPDATE* Bunnyken has a message for you. (holy shit!)

Brillo Boxes

Brillo Boxes by Arahan Claveau

Its a nice idea to port Warhol’s works to SL… but the life of the original doesn’t quite make it through. Cubes are afforded by Second Life, so its obvious to texture a cube. Perhaps this is a comment on this very nature of the world… but I’m not sure. It appears as though this is part of a larger “Warhola” show that hopefully will bring more to the table. I look forward to seeing more in this series in a more controlled environment, where perhaps the artist’s commentary on the relationship of Warhol/SL can be clearer.

Friday Night Fever

There was an opening at Jack the Pelican Presents for artistSusan McWilliams who had an installation with videos. Also in the gallery was a performance by Irvin Morazan which was pretty gosh darn strange but that didn’t stop a large number of brooklyn art fans from playing with second life and enjoying the art that SL artists have created for BIW.

Arthur C. Clarke, 90, Science Fiction Writer, Dies

Posted by Kat2 Kit on March 19th, 2008

During our last podcast we spoke about the idea of Avatars that had huge influences on Second Life but are now gone for whatever reasons. So far in my 4 weeks at Brooklyn is Watching we have built two memorials, one a huge 20 sided die for Gary Gygax and now a huge Monolith in remembrance of Arthur C. Clarke

It has been mentioned how Dungons and Dragons established alot of what is Second Life today, and that the writing of Arthur C Clarke has inspired us all.
