Congrats to Alizarin Goldflake who got the most artworks into the top 30 (4) and also I want to say congrats to Selavy Oh who as an artist actually got the highest total number of votes from the podcasters but because they were spread out across a large number of works, only got 2 artworks into the show. This was always going to be about the best works – so we knew we could end up with fewer than 30 artists.

Here is the place to write comments about what should have gotten in but didn’t and why. If anyone wants to organize a concurrent “Salon des Refusés” type of show somewhere please do and we’ll cover it here on the blog. This show, like everything else in BIW is just a point of departure for further discussion. Nothing is ever definitive!

oh and i think the comment editing thing is fixed now btw.

Naturally I think my own list (see the previous post) would have made a better show, but I’m a biased observer. At least we got a DC piece and an Arahan piece in, even if they weren’t my personal favorites, as well as what I considered the most important works of the year.

My short list for the most important works would include Dekka’s 8 Platforms, Ichibot and Arahan’s Beyond Human, Ichibot’s episodic.atomized, and Nebulosus’s I’m Sorry Dad. My strongest response is to art that is both visually and emotionally powerful and those works score on both counts. If I were one of the members of the Top 5 jury I think those would be four of them, and then I’d think hard about #5. I’m not so worried about influencing them; they’re experts and so they’re used to ignoring everybody else’s opinions :)

My most notable omission is Tuna Oddfellow’s visual show; I guess not enough of the voters have seen one. Even though he’s not an official Top 30 contestant, we should invite him over to do a special show during the retrospective. Honorable mentions for omissions go to Shellina Winkler (any of her nominated pieces; she just missed out in the popular vote because of the strong block voting for the favorite artists), Ally Aeon’s Virtual Formalism, and the luntsberg candy castle by CickMy Lunt.

Yeah Shirley there are actually alot of really good works that didn’t make it. Truly that whole list of nominees is pretty dog-gone good. Anyone who was nominated should be proud to be in that list IMHO. I”m especially sad that Robin Moore and ClickMy Lunt didn’t make it – also Qarl Fizz and Four Yipp, Tuna Oddfellow, 010000100111001001100001 OMlet and Ford Heberle.

Hey y’all who do you think should have gotten in but didn’t and why? Also If there was some work that didn’t get nominated tell us why it should have and post links to documentation of it (or a SLURL to where it is now if its on display)

Because the works in question are virtual being excluded from a particular show doesn’t preclude them getting further attention.

Whoops, I posted my list of works that I voted for under a previous post (Shirley’s “My Picks…”) when actually this might have been the better place to put it.

Very surprised that ClickMy Lunt didn’t make it, but so it goes. It will be very hard judging this.

oooOOOoo. Lovely to see such a great selection made it through (and honored to be included :) .

I’m particularly happy to see Bryn Oh’s Rabicorn Environment made it in as I just stumbled across:
http://brynoh.blogspot.com/2009/07/rabbicorn-story-opens-july-10th-at-ibm3.html

It seems Bryn has been busy turning the work into something rather more ambitious :)

Congratulations to all the finalists! Yay!

Jay, a few of four Yip’s works can be seen currently (haphazardly) at Soup, in the Magritte room, in the Nameless Cellars, on the rooftop, and scattered around.

First Congrats to ALL!!! Mega claps! The difficulty in selecting top 20 works certainly speaks volumes about the quality of work appearing on BIW. And I trust that the voting process will be even MORE difficult next year! I do hope the competition is healthy and inspires and fuels work, and gives artists the opportunity to assess directions, formally/conceptually, that they have been moving in. I too struggled with what qualified as “best” or “important” work (as mentioned by Shirley), against my own aesthetic biases, as well as naming double nominees versus including more artists. I was even bargaining with myself in establishing my picks, how silly, trying to keep myself in critical check!! Being a “newbie” and all, the wiki was really a great record, and catch-up on artist’s developing bodies of work. I myself had several double nominees on my list, including via collaboration, signaling some pretty distinct voices. Arahan Claveau, Ichibot Nishi, Dekka Raymaker, Selavy Oh, Juria Yoshikawa and DanCoyote Antonelli all received double nods, in one form or another. I was personally more in agreement with the top 20, than with what eventually surfaced as the people’s picks. I think Gazira Babeli’s Second Soup, was robbed, but oh well, can’t win ‘em all!!!! Viva la Bunnyken!!!!

MonCherrie, Gazira’s Second Soup can be seen (and experienced) here:

OK, I’m feeling sort of foolish, but can someone please help me find Lonetorus’s Garden of Color in the exhibition? I’ve searched undersea, in the sky…

AH, actually- Lonetorus elected for unknown (to me) reasons not to participate — we’re in the process of getting that work replaced– i’ll post more about it when i hear from walter how that is going.

Glad to know I’m not just blind. I’ll eagerly await the 30th. Thanks, Jay!
