thanks again for talking about my work. i just wanted to briefly comment on the underwater piece, not only because i enjoyed a lot listening to the apparent confusion, but also because i realized that i probably should have left a notecard with it.
the underwater piece is the remnant of a temporary collaborative installation with ichibot nishi at a different location. ichibot’s prims (the main part of the installation) are all removed, most of what constituted my part is left (they’re all freebie sculpties), yet many of my prims have been modified or moved to a new position by ichibot, and that’s what you can see. it is, in a sense, an archaeological relict, a trace, the debris of a performance, an incomplete picture, a puzzle for which the missing pieces are gone forever. the piece is an index to a past event, evoking a memory for those who have experienced it, and perhaps leaving an unfulfilled desire for the others.
the indexicality of the work, its evocation of transience, together with the almost indistinguishable mixture of creators, all that in a medium, which is so rapidly changing and forgetting, where nothing really is just what it is, that’s what interested me.
