[...] Brooklyn is Watching posted the show today! We met and discussed my project as well as another art installation in world. See and hear it here. [...]

Hi Jay both the iTunes downloads are the Azdel Slade podcasts, but the MP3 link that plays direct on the web is correct.

“I always think of [artists] like us as thorns in the side: you poke ‘em and poke ‘em and poke ‘em and one day they will bleed. You just keep poking ‘em and poking ‘em until all of a sudden they’re bleeding everywhere” Patti Smith

If they was a Care Linden, they would have to give you a Care Bear?

Just finished watching the Azdel video which was interesting but frustrating because there was no introduction or explanation about what the project was, the video presumes that we already know who Azdel is and what ‘Becoming Dragon’ is all about. I had to work that out for myself by the fragments given away in the conversation and I’m still not sure about some of it.

That said the whole concept of transforming oneself into a different species, gender or personality by an extended period of immersion in a virtual environment is an intriguing one, it just took quite a lot of effort and guesswork to ascertain that is what was going on.

And as I was typing that I listened to the second podcast. You touched on some important areas which hopefully you can expand on in the future. Dekka’s work is a real treat and obviously took him a lot of thought and time to construct, it is a work that one has to spend time in and multiple visits to appreciate fully. I hope it stays at BiW longer than a week so more people get to see it.

Shame you didn’t mention Ichi’s vast accomplishment under the water, was it just a time factor that prevented any discussion on it?

Sorry to be a negative Nellie but the sound quality mostly sucked.

Good points Arahan — we were in a rush to post the audio and video (I had promised Azdel), and I always meant there to be some supporting material in the blog post, but ran out of time last night. I will edit the post and add it now.

As for sound quality, Azdel remarked how sound was like rocket science in SL, and this was our first attempt to record using SL voice and not from Skype. That said, I did my best to boost the sound when it was low (Jay’s voice) and bring it down when it was loud (Azdel’s). Didn’t have a lot of time to play with this given that I have 150 papers to grade. You get the point…

Hi Beth. I do appreciate the logistics involved in getting something like this together every week, and fitting it in with all your other commitments must be a nightmare. The effort is appreciated and we are listening with interest.

Thanks Arahan! Just visited a great installation at New Caerleon (Thanks to Misprint Thursday for the invite) — “Life is a Bowl…” Some really beautiful things there, and some fun things too…

Yes, Arahan, we ran out of time so we didn’t get to Ichibot’s work. I’ll be blogging that and we’ll try to get to it in the next podcast.

Most of us in the podcast got no more explanation of Azdel’s project than you listeners did. In brief, it’s an thesis project on the nature of identity, exploring the question of whether a human really can “become dragon”, or at least become something other than human. It’s a very cyberpunk sort of thing: my definition of cyberpunk is “the branch of speculative literature that explores the question of what it is to be human through the lens of what it is to be posthuman”.

hey, thanks for the feedback.

while my dragon voice is usually not very clear, there seems to be some extra wave interference happening in this recording, it bugs me too.

i tried to explain the project from the beginning in the podcast, but here’s a link to the press release:

also, i’m having my closing party/reception tues night at 8pm SLT, so come by in SL and hear some tunes and dance!

I really tried to get the sound to be better - i tried “noise reduction” and that just made everything sound like we were inside a giant aliens belly, and i tried “compression” that seemed to help the loud-then-soft-then-loud thing.

Thanks for the explanations folks, and for those links Azdel.

Something to say?
