Hi!

The first work your panel discussed is called “VerySillyMilliTude” and is indeed a further departure from dogma, but also an adherence to it in some ways. However the point of the work is to spoof the quality of verisimilitude that shadows and concrete texture may evoke.

As the user walks through the rows the spheres move around perterbing the lighting. The lighting is one of the key points of the piece beyond the spoof of manufacturing “reality” or what many refer to as “remediation”.

The second work mentioned briefly called “Tomb Maze” that is a challenge to the patience of people to wangle their way through the solid space. It can be done. by it isn’t easy!

What is cool is that “Tomb Maze” has now been spoofed by Rezago Kokorin called “Noob Maze”.

Rezago even went so far as to quai-quote my title cards. I kept trying to get the anvil to fall, which I think would make the piece complete!

thanks to ichibot for the comments on the podcast. some of his references concerning my work are certainly not evident in the “portraits”, but refer to other work.
just as an example: the flavin-reference is intended and very explicit in ‘monument for m.’, a very simple piece, which has been at BiW for a while, and is now part of ’systems of reference’ at arthole. click on it, if you are there …

as a sidenote: ichi told me later that rachel whiteread’s mission seems to be to litter the world with white boxes. oh well. i didn’t dare to ask what, in his opinion, carl andre’s mission is …

I actually know Rachel, who imo is a hard working mum who is just lucky enough to make lots of money from her art. Next time I speak to her I should ask her what she thinks her mission is.

I was refering to the basic units of Rachel’s huge Embankment installation and furthermore not just Andre’s bricks but also his working within concrete environments. Obviously there’s an emotional dimension to Whiteread’s casts(and the inside of your sketchbook) that doesn’t pertain to a similar unit in a mathematical model. Nontheless I think you make up for this in your own way in things like Nested Cubes where the viewer creates his/her own temporary environment within a huge block made up of smaller basic building blocks. The Nested Cube also played around with lightning and in that respect I think Flavin and others are relevant too; Not just like: this is a replicate of an actual Dan Flavin piece. I honestly think you are much more than that. The discipline of your work is evident, even more so when it is situated next to the more common very overdone bend and twisted disco inferno no-pupose stuff in BiW. I don’t think it hurts pointing that out.

Finally, apart from being a lucky mum Rachel Whiteread is also quite brilliant. At least give her that, heh.
