I’ve got a special treat for you! more podcast conversation.

Captain’s log supplemental: This week the guy who introduced me to second life is here in the big apple with me and I really wanted to get his thoughts on some of the art on BIW recorded. We had a great little conversation on friday afternoon in Jack the Pelican Presents with Anneliis Beadnell who is currently working on her MFA in contemporary art at Sotheby’s and is the Gallery Manager at JTPP.

We talk about works by Dekka Raymaker and Hangur Lundquist and discuss the question of what does or does not count as an “installation” in second life.

So is ‘Safe Zone’ art or not? Well there were a lot of prims available and the temptation to build something was overpowering, especially while I am presently in another country on someone else’s computer and it was a off-the-cuff spontaneous response to ending up in Selavy’s ‘attraction’ once again. In my opinion it isn’t a ‘installation’ but it does/did exist in response to ‘art’ there, so what would one call that? Then again work I consider to be a ‘art installation’ that I have placed is also in part in response to what is happening at BiW, but it is always considered and the piece becomes an emotional object/event for me.

I’d call it art for sure. And in my opinion its an installation because it invokes the history of installation art in my head…

it invokes a certain mood. Dekka, what do you think of AM radio’s work? His work seems very much related to yours.

I am a big fan of AM Radio’s work and it does invoke a mood I really love and if I ever get to his level of expertise in my own builds, I’ll be a very happy avatar.

Until you asked the question I have never had to consider if his builds have influenced my style, and so I spoke at length about this question with Penumbra Carter and she said that she thinks my work evokes a peaceful isolation similar to AM’s builds too, so I guess it would be kind of dumb of me to say that his builds haven’t influenced me in some way. But, I certainly hope that my style isn’t seen as trying to blatantly copy AM Radio, one would like to think their ’style’ is their own.

Something to say?
