There are two parts to this work. At the bottom, there is a flat photo box that cycles between three textures: a movie poster for Metropolis, a negative image of the same poster, and a closeup view of the face in the poster; this part is named Metropolis, I Was. (The second picture shows the three images side by side.) Above and behind that is a dynamic, vaguely tree-like object that uses the same textures; this part is named Yes, I Was – Metropolis. The notecards that the pieces of the work give out when you click them (two different notecards, though they share a lot of content) identify the overall work as Yes, I Was.
I found this work fascinating because of the use of basically representational textures (the various images of the movie poster) into a work that is largely abstract. You can see hints of the texture in it, most notably the face on the “trunk”, but the overall effect is very different from that of looking at the poster images.
