SHOW NOTES

In Episode 15, Caffeinated and well rested Jay ends up yelling at middle-of-the-night tired and drunk Jay because he’s freaking annoying (really, Val how do you put up with that guy?). Our panel is broken into two parts with Jay talking to Valerie Eakes-Kann an internet technology expert wed night, and Student art historian and BIW project intern, Sarah Milstein, and the Jack the Pelican gallery assistant known as “Russia” on a lovely Friday afternoon from JTPP. We discuss works by Ford Heberle, Juria Yoshikawa, Ichibot Nishi , Nebulosus Severine, Holly Hax and Klink Epsilon

100% Lush and marvelous. To throw in a reference; the host at times sounds very much like Francis Bacon in the infamous south bank show documentary by Melvyn Bragg.
You can see latter here, if so inclined.

hey guys i wanted to clear up something that you mentioned in your podcast where you said the music did not work on my art pieces. the directions (which you get when you walk into the cube) state that you can click on the images and each one will give you a notecard which has the lyrics as well as a youtube link to the individual songs.

Hey, thanks for looking at my piece Sycophant/Parvenu. The piece started as a paper artwork (the two cartoon guys) before I entered Second Life, and the divan and shrine came last week. Selavy Oh wonderfully co-opted and enhanced my piece and added the scripting that shows your profile picture and shouts your profile text to the world. Vanity, envy, contempt: yee ha.

Jay,
to answer the question you asked me in the podcast — No, the spiral that had been intersecting “I’m sorry, Dad” isn’t meant to be there. It isn’t my object and to be honest I am not sure why it was placed there, perhaps the creator wasn’t aware it would move through my piece.

In any case I have moved my installation a little bit higher so that is no longer an issue.

Hey I just wanna saying something about the response to my piece on this weeks podcast.

I didn’t mind when you found the piece grotesque(that’s the response I wanted) or that you didn’t like it(plenty of people told me they loved it). I knew this work would get a mixed reaction so I was kind expecting the response I got. The two things maybe three that I take issue with is

1. I didn’t go OH the BIW love being grossed out so I will make a piece just to please them. I was pretty mindful about that, originally I wasn’t going to display this piece because of my fear that you would say that extact thing. But that’s kinda like censoring myself so I just said sodd it I make art just for me because I like and if anyone else likes it that’s a bonus.

2.One word that pissed me off, in all the time I have done art I nothing really that was said about my art work has bothered me until now. It was called “Juvenile”…that’s a pretty low comment because if you calling my art that then you could probably call some of the art that has come through the sim the same thing.

However I am thick skinned and I’m pretty much over it now,I will say one thing about my piece. Even though it was based on a dream I think that it had a deeper meaning. Sometimes view the human race how those aliens are, basically they are fighting to get to the top and they will do anything to get there.

Klink dude, it wasn’t all bad and did you not see this?

Hey Klink, i definitely would call alot of stuff that comes through the sim the same thing, its always a mixed bag– your earlier work got pretty high praise from some of the podcast participants… looking back maybe i was being too harsh using the word “juvenile” that’s an implication from a motive for being lurid that maybe wasn’t there… actually there’s a lot more i could say here not sure i’m explaining myself very well maybe i should shut the hell up- but i want to throw it out to the rest of the community — what do you all think? you’ve seen unnatural selection- you’ve read what Shirley had to say on this blog, you heard what me, Sarah and Russia had to say on the podcast– what do you all think? and also how does this work compare with klink’s earlier efforts?

Jay, BiW have censored one thing, that was the Brooklyn is Wanking sign which was removed by Boris I think? At least you did talk about it but it was still censorship of course.

As far as an opinion on Klink’s work, I agree that his previous installation (can’t recall the name sorry, but the one with the trees and notes relating to relationships) was much more interesting and successfully realised. I think everyone from BiW who spoke about it was encouraging and fair in their observations.

The alien dream just doesn’t have the same depth and resonance but Klink should still be applauded for attempting to relate his experience in a way that uses the tools of SL.

I personally appreciate the constructive and honest critique we get from the BiW team. It is infinitely more preferable to the sycophantic ego massaging so rife in the SL art scene.

ok here goes… :/
I think Unnatrual Selection is maybe a little bit too obvious, it leaves me no room to breathe as a viewer.

On another note I think H.P. Lovecraft based all of his work on dreams too.

Something to say?
