Klink’s eyeballs are gone; this time he offers us an even less kind and gentle exhibition, Unnatural Selection. This includes four pieces: Backstabbing the backstabber (shown above), I have ripped your head offf, I will smash your fucking skull until brreaks, and Just Like a hawk but it’s like a jellyfis (spellings as given by the artist), all displayed on a sky platform.
The four pieces show violent acts being committed by somewhat humanoid metallic figures. Two of them have particle ichor coming out of the bodies (green in one case, emphasizing the non-human nature of the figures); this is not an exhibit for the squeamish. Seeing violence committed by metallic, somewhat robot-like figures affected my reactions; I wondered whether this was a comment on the universality of violence, even among creatures that aren’t human.
One of the things I love about Second Life is its relative freedom from violence. (Yes, I know there are combat areas and role-playing regions; I just don’t go there.) It radically changes the dynamic of human interaction, and especially the nature of gender roles — being a woman is very different in a world where you can’t be raped, robbed, or assaulted. Looking at these pieces made me think about the unique nature of our world here and its artificiality; is this a Utopia, or are we just pretending that such a world is possible?
