Brillo Boxes by Arahan Claveau

Its a nice idea to port Warhol’s works to SL… but the life of the original doesn’t quite make it through. Cubes are afforded by Second Life, so its obvious to texture a cube. Perhaps this is a comment on this very nature of the world… but I’m not sure. It appears as though this is part of a larger “Warhola” show that hopefully will bring more to the table. I look forward to seeing more in this series in a more controlled environment, where perhaps the artist’s commentary on the relationship of Warhol/SL can be clearer.

It is indeed a small component of a much larger project I’m working on for the NMC Campus. The finished work will contain video, sound and a space evocative of the Exploding Plastic Inevitable events but using the tools of Second Life to create a unique, virtual experience.

Thanks for your interest and comments.

Funny thing - I did (in RL) an installation at the Warhol museum in Pittsburgh using brillo boxes… and I did the mockup for that piece in SL. So when I first came across these, I thought I had somehow (drunk? brain fart? because I didn’t remember doing it) added my own work to the sim and was much relieved to see that it belongs to someone else!

I think camb was right when he/she said “the life of the original doesn’t quite make it through”. I absolutely agree that the boxes look rather dull and uninspiring but I think that is because they are not in context and also the surroundings. The Brooklyn is Watching land is not designed or intended to look like a gallery space, so I think some artists work will seem out of place in this environment. But, I also think this will help focus attention more on the work, which is the purpose of the project from what I can determine.

Amy, it’s OK, there has not been a rift in the space-time continuum!

Something to say?
