SL Newbie, Hackworth Klaxon endures spotty Wi-Fi and and single-digit framerates to interview the infamous SL Artist.

[10:28] Dancoyote Antonelli: heyas!
[10:29] Hackworth Klaxon: hi

I do Hyperformalism

i saw the images in back

of the Full immersion show?
that one won an international prize for architecture from UNESCO
want a landmark?
[10:33] Dancoyote Antonelli gave Hackworth Klaxon DanCoyote Full Immersion Hyperformalism (43, 135, 706).
I also have nearly a dozen other locations in SL

cool, thanks

but that is the one I like best
hey so
if you go there
remember to increase your draw distance
so you can see the depth

haha i just cranked mine down

dood

i am the blind art critic

you’re an artist
are you an artist or a critic?

i play a critic on tv

are you a good witch or a bad witch?
hehe

my puter is slow

Broadcast is Colonialism

well… its a mac

sorry to hear that
well at least that part is good

SL crawls it

I am pretty skeptical about so called “interactive art in RL

because physical media is very hard to work with
it tends to be
“push a button, get a cookie”

my work is native to the virtual space
I dont bother with material space
what I do is not modeling for RL

how does creating in-world affect the product?
does it?

16000 years ago
a man in a cave
slathered wet charcoal on his hand
slapped it on the cave wall
he was saying
I did this
I was here
it was not about his hand
the hand was only the technology he used to send the message

true
do you work with other 3D modelling software?

I am somewhat older than you might expect
a mid career artist
I have worked with everything
I kinda grew up at the right time
the transition period
Photoshop 1.0
yes
I work in 3D apps as well
shhh
dont tell anyone
I would hate to get a job or something!

oh is it uncool to say that in the SL community?

no
Im kidding you

the SL community is quite varied
from total turds to golden angels

far from cohesive

this is what I understand

just like in RL there is a lot of dynamism

is the germ thing over ther your piece?

the conical shaped one is mine
conical
want to see something cool?

YES

[10:48] Hackworth Klaxon shouts: WTF

[10:49] sixth finger 3-07 owned by Dancoyote Antonelli gave you ‘The sixth finger? 10′ ( http://slurl.com/secondlife/Popcha/23/176/36 ).
dont fiddle

pls

ok

does this only appear for you?

the controller is called the “grail”
it is like circuit bending

okay

an arcane bastardization of existing paradgm
the secondary artifact
is the animated flock
the difference between me and most people who do animted hyperformalism in SL
is that mine is infinitely extensible
and driven by voice and input from control surfaces
voice = chat
in this case

(Saved Wed Mar 5 14:01:31 2008) sorry, didnt mean to scare you off!

sorry about that! My wireless dropped

yikes!
if you make work here
strive to be original
canvas the field
and see what has been done
dont make a career out of the first thing you see

yes this is what I’m realizing… its crowded

lotta people fall into that trap
yes

the medium is no longer the content

there is a lot more art history here than people realize
this is the lost tribe of the art world
that migrated to SL wilds
and yes
I personallything MM was wrong
the medium is NOT the message
the message is all that matters
the medium is a conduit
the medium is artifice

art theory vs. media theory

nobodyis complete
media or art
there is overlap
but it does not serve art to be brought down to media level
and it does not serve humanity to remove the wonder of art
and make it banal

hmmm

the nihlism of postmodern theory is over

the optimism of connectivity?

it is a pathetic attempt at mass suicide
the hope associated with wonder
without the baggage of RL anthropomorphism
art is free to be wonderous
in SL
there is not race or gender
not really
it becomes a construct
so much play like everthing else
this frees art from ideological struggles
and polemic
to do the important social work of inspiration
art was never very good at politics anyway

is inspiration through the lens of commercial software affected?

a tool is a tool

the politics of software

a pencil can be used for anything
and so can a computer

Microsoft Word affecting the writing process… or Powerpoint?

all tools constrain
it is their job to do so
it is the job of thinkinng beings to be aware
of this
and work with the limitations
one cant blame tools
tools are not the message
it is how you use them that counts
and that you can put on the blog
!-D
sorry I am somewhat of a theorist
everything I do in SL

no its good

looks abstract
but is based in theory

its helpful to me, and i hope will be to others aswell

critical studies
Im only too happy to share theory
and to learn from you as well

thanks very much once again for all the excellent insight!

I’m not so sure about this– the ultimate medium, actually is our bodies, our five senses, whatever medium we are working in is then translated into that- and that medium inevitably becomes part of the message- we can ignore it for a while but its always there isn’t it?

this is the source of one of my reservations about second life art. Actually Rubaiyat Shatner and I have discussed this. I wonder if he has something to say about it…..

Actually he did-= here’s what he had to say:
In its most basic sense I have to agree that the medium is not the message, however the message is not the message either.

That is to say that the message void of medium is no message it has not transference it has no value.

The big mistake is to try to wholly separate the medium and the message, in my work I operate around ideas and find media that support the ideas in a functional way.

In working with a medium I commission words that utilize the strengths of the environment or materials, not always to great success, but the exploration is important.

Rubaiyat Shatner of Ars Virtua

Something to say?
